Since its archaeological excavation (1983-1987), the late Bronze Age Heunischenburg is considered the oldest scientifically researched stone castle in Europe north of the Alps. The mighty fortification on the Wolfsberg served to monitor a copper and tin trade route in the 9th century BC.
A section of wall reconstructed in 1986/2000 and the gateway with gate offer a unique opportunity to get a vivid picture of the earliest castle construction. The elaborate architecture of the impressive fortification reveals influences from the Mediterranean region.
Numerous artefacts suggest that the fortress was destroyed around 800 BC. They also document how coveted this hotly contested site must have been in the Urnfield period. Its mighty stone wall and the complex gate system with gateway make the Heunischenburg one of the most high-quality fortifications of the late Bronze Age in the whole of Central Europe.
