Castles and palaces are stone witnesses to history – built in times when accessibility was not yet an issue. On the contrary: castles in particular were designed to put as many barriers as possible in the way of their attackers: from their difficult-to-access location on a mountain, to walls, gates and moats, to the tower-like keep as a last resort. With this fortified architecture, the castle dwellers wanted to protect themselves as best they could from the cruelty and greed of their enemies. Palaces, on the other hand, served primarily for representation and display of splendour and are therefore usually much more accessible.
Nevertheless, as unique historical relics of the past, often even listed as historical monuments, castles and palaces can often only be converted to be barrier-free with great effort and considerable intervention in the architectural fabric. In addition, accessibility is a complex issue – not only in the monuments themselves, but also in terms of information and communication services or the tourist infrastructure. For this reason, not all locations and monuments along the Castle Road can yet guarantee complete accessibility.
A trip along the Castle Road is still worthwhile, however, as many places already offer barrier-free attractions, from castle museums to hiking trails and from hotels to city tours in sign language. To help you plan your individual Castle Road tour, we have compiled all the attractions in our member locations here. Discover the Castle Road according to your needs. We hope you enjoy it.

In front of St. James' Church there is a model of Rothenburg for the blind.
Rothenburg's medieval charm is largely defined by its cobbled streets. In addition, the picturesque townscape above the Tauber river features some considerable differences in elevation. The wonderfully winding architecture is beautiful, but also presents challenges for residents and visitors alike. The town of Rothenburg is striving to achieve noticeable improvements and minimise barriers through consistent measures.
St. Jakob's Town Church
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is located on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela, so that over 1,000 pilgrims visit St. Jakob's Church every year. The ground floor of St. Jakob's Town Church is accessible.
The main altar, also known as the 12 Apostles Altar, was created by Friedrich Herlin and features, among other things, the oldest depiction of Rothenburg's market square. The Rieger organ is one of the largest in Bavaria and can be played from both sides, facing the nave and the west choir. It can be heard throughout the year in short, free organ concerts, and during Advent in 30-minute concerts. The impressive Holy Blood Altar by Tilman Riemenschneider is located in the gallery and is therefore unfortunately not accessible to wheelchair users.

Burg Garden
The castle garden, laid out in the 19th century, extends as a green oasis at the end of Herrngasse beyond the castle gate. Viewing platforms offer a magnificent view of the Tauber Valley and the city silhouette. The name goes back to a Staufer castle that stood here until the middle of the 14th century. At the Blasius Chapel, the only remaining building of the former Staufer castle, a display board describes the structure and function of the former castle complex. The castle garden is completely barrier-free and accessible around the clock.
