Nuremberg Zoo, with its numerous water features, old trees, sandstone formations and extensive meadows, is rightly considered one of the largest and most beautiful landscape zoos in Europe. Covering 63 hectares, it is home to around 2,700 animals from some 270 species. It bridges the gap between the native habitat for many water birds and fish, deserts, semi-deserts and steppes, which are home to Grevy's zebras, Somali wild asses and goitered gazelles, and the tropical rainforest in the Manatee House. In the Aqua Park, otters, penguins, sea lions and polar bears frolic in an extensive water landscape. The dolphinarium, which opened in 1971, was supplemented in 2011 by the dolphin lagoon, the first outdoor facility for dolphins in Germany. Nuremberg Zoo participates in 46 international breeding programmes and is a partner zoo of the Species Protection Foundation.

What can we humans learn from nature and why is this so important for the future of our blue planet? Children and adults can find answers to these questions in the 400 m² interactive exhibition "Ideenreich Natur". The museum offers information on topics relevant to the future such as nature and species conservation, biodiversity and sustainable resource utilisation, creative innovations and technologies of the future. In addition to exciting background information, visitors can also immerse themselves in the world of bionics using original exhibits and hands-on experiments. Last but not least, a bionic tour leads through the zoo, where the biological models can be marvelled at directly at the animal enclosures.
