The museum presents the town's history and the history of the princedom Ansbach. The collections comprehend, among others, creations of the court painter of Ansbach and a coins- and medal hall in a building complex from the 14th to 18th century. On the ground floor of the main building the Kasper-Hauser-departement is dedicated to the "foundling of Europe" who was killed in 1833 in Ansbach.
