Kilianskirche

St. Kilian's Church

The western tower was created by Hans Schweiffer and completed in 1529. It belongs to the first renaissance buildings north of the Alps. His ornamental figures with mocking grimaces against clergy and monasteries is a satirical song against the former conditions in the catholic church. Also the figure on the church spire - in the vernacular lovingly called "Männle" (little man) - is exceptional: It constitutes a steeled citizen with broadsword and municipal coat banner. The original created by Hans Schweiner stands in the town hall today. The famous carved altar by Hans Seyfer, which was completed in 1498, belongs to the "total artwork St. Kilian's Church". His sculptures made out of lime wood survived the second world war in the salt mine in Bad Friedrichshall. After the reconstruction beginning in 1947 the St. Kilian's Church today is one of the pieces of jewellery of Heilbronn. The ascension of the tower complex is possible upon request, phone +49 (0) 7131 86869 or 82253.

Heilbronn Deutschordensmuenster 800 Teutonic Cathedral
Teutonic Cathedral "Deutschordensmünster" and Deutschhof courtyard.

Deutschordensmünster

Teutonic Knights' Cathedral

The cathedral is the parish church of the Catholics of Heilbronn. The first Teutonic church was built in the 13th century. The tower chancel displays Romanesque and early Gothic components in the outdoor area and significant sacred artistic elements in the interior. Extensions in Gothic and Renaissance followed, yet the baroque redesign in the beginning of the 18th century isn't considered to be the most considerable. The church was destroyed to its curtain walls in World War II. The reconstruction and several renovations were made after 1949. The renewals in the years 1994/1995 now convey an insight in the construction eras of the past centuries.

Rathaus

Town Hall

The town hall of Heilbronn arose around 1417 at the time of the Gothic period and was rebuilt in the renaissance style until the end of the 16th century. Remainings of the first stone house are recognisable at the eastern exterior wall. The town hall arcades, beneath the significant outside staircase, created between 1581 and 1593, shelters a 6.5 metres long stone bench, on which - according to the inscription - the guardians were able to settle down. In the vault of the town hall, today's restaurant "Ratskeller", commercial goods were stored until the end of the 19th century. The building was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt between 1959 and 1963; the contemporary eastern rehabilitation was completed between 1959 and 1963. The embedded relief with the motive "Jesus and the Samaritan" stems from the great fountain complex, which stood in the middle of the Kirchbrunnen Street from 1541 until 1868. Noteworthy are also the two pillory recesses.

Heilbronn astronomische Kunstuhr 800 Astronomic Clock at the Town Hall
Astronomic Clock at the Town Hall.

Astronomische Kunstuhr am Rathaus

Astronomical Art Clock at the Town Hall

The astronomical art clock at the Town Hall of Heilbronn was created by Isaak Habrecht in 1580. He only created a similar masterpiece once for the Strasbourg Cathedral. The artfully designed three-part frame of the clock was designed by Hans Kurz, the architect of the Renaissance Town Hall.
The clock shows the seven weekdays by sun, moon, Mars, Mercure, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, the months by twelve zodiac signs. Hourly the mechanic play is to be admired, by which the time display takes place. Every four hours between 8 am and 8 pm you can hear the crowing of a golden rooster. Further information

Heilbronn Kaethchenhaus
"Käthchenhaus" at the Market Place.

Käthchenhaus

"Cathy's House"

This gothic stone house from the 14th century was especially remarkable in the old timber frame city. The house received its name from the historic knight play "Cathy of Heilbronn" by Heinrich von Kleist. In 1843 printed travel guides initially designated the medieval looking building as the "Cathy House", without a direct connection to the play was proven. At the suggestion of Heilbronn's reformer Johannes Lachmann, who has lived in this house, the architect of the Kilian Tower, Hans Schweiner, supposedly designed the beautiful renaissance bay with the bust portraits of four prophetes. Today a restaurant is in the basement and office and residential rooms in the top floor.

Heilbronn WeinVilla Wein Villa
Wein Villa.

Wein Villa

Wine Villa

The former Villa Faißt was built in 1873 and received its current "Stadtpalais" face, among others, from the Stuttgart professor of architecture Robert von Reinhardt. In 1995, the Stadtsiedlung Heilbronn acquired the Wilhelminian-style villa, which was in great need of renovation. The villa was renovated in detail in cooperation with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments. Not only the neoclassical façade, but above all the splendid interiors with their ceiling and wall paintings make it valuable in terms of town history and art history.

Hafenmarktturm

Vessel Market Tower

At the end of the 13th century the Franciscans built their monastery complex between Sülmerstreet and the eastern city wall. Their church, an early Gothic church with ridge turrets, was destroyed in 1688 during the Palatine war of succession. The imperial city had a tower built in baroque forms around 1727 with donations, which suffered severe damage in 1944. In the renovated and refurbished tower is a memorial for the persons killed in action of both world wars. A hand-forged Phoenix, as a symbol of the reconstruction of Heilbronn, crowns the complex. Daily at 10.55 am and at 7.20 pm five different traditional songs sound from the tower, intoned by chimes. The key for the tower can be borrowed on pledge at the tourist information (Monday - Friday 10 am-6 pm, Saturday 10 am-4 pm) as well as at the Otto Rettenmeier House (Saturday and Sunday 10 am-4 pm).

Heilbronn Goetzenturm 800 Götzenturm Tower at the Old Neckar River
Götzenturm Tower at the Old Neckar River.

Götzenturm

"Götz Tower"

The "square tower" that was built in 1392 became the "Götzenturm" in the 19th century, because Goethe let the hero of his drama "Götz von Berlichingen" die in front of a tower. The famous knight actually was held in a tower in Heilbronn, however in the "Bollwerksturm" (bulwark tower), for one night during his three and a half years of imprisonment (1519-1522). Today both towers herald the enormous fortification, which has been built between the 13th and the 14th century to defend the Imperial City.
On top of the Götzenturm the silhouet of the sculpture "Above the Abyss" of the artist Hubertus von der Goltz from Berlin balances.
The key to visit the tower can be borrowed on pledge at the tourist information (Mon-Fri 10 am-6 pm, Sat 10 am-4 pm) and also in the House of the City's History ("Haus der Stadtgeschichte") - Otto Rettenmaier House (Sat and Sun 10 am-5 pm). Further information

Bollwerksturm

Bulwark Tower

Besides the tower "Götzenturm", the bulwark tower "Bollwerksturm", which was built in the 13th century, is a witness of the tower fortification, which began in the Staufer era. The "spherical tower" ("kugeliger Turm") became the "Bollwerksturm" in the middle of the 17th century due to the creation of a large bulwark. In 1519 Götz von Berlichen, who has been arrested by the Swabian Federation and gallantly imprisoned in the Imperial City, served a sentence here for one night. The key to visit the tower can be borrowed at the tourist information (Mon-Fri 10 am-6 pm, Sat 10 am-4 pm) and also in the House of the City's History ("Haus der Stadtgeschichte") - Otto Rettenmaier House (Sat and Sun 10 am-5 pm) on pledge.
