Seßlach: Hattersdorfer Torturm

Did you know that Seßlach still has a complete medieval town wall? It has three gates and many defensive towers – the tallest is the Hattersdorf Gate Tower. How tall is it? Nobody knows for sure – but you could have a go at guessing. The best thing to do is climb the tower with your parents and count the steps. From the top, you’ll also have a fantastic view over the town and the surrounding countryside.

Seßlach: Hotzenplotz-Hut in der Tourist-Info

Watch out – the robber Hotzenplotz was here! Don’t believe it? Then pop into the tourist information centre – they’ve got his hat on display there. And if you fancy it, have a go at wearing it – your parents are sure to love taking a photo of you in it!

Did you know that the 2006 film ‘The Robber Hotzenplotz’ was actually partly filmed in Seßlach? Take a really close look at the market square – and perhaps you’ll recognise the Rodach Bridge, the allotment next to the bridge and the barn of what is now the ‘Kleiner Pörtner’ (it served as a prison in the film). And the hat? It’s one of the five original film hats worn by Hotzenplotz actor Armin Rohde during filming.

Seßlach: Burgspielplatz

The newly redesigned Seßlach Castle Playground (also known as the Oberer Zwinger Playground) is an adventure playground situated right next to the historic city walls. Following a comprehensive renovation by a parents’ initiative, the ‘play paradise’ was officially reopened in May 2025. Seßlach: Naturschutzgebiet "Tongruben Muggenbach"

The former Muggenbach clay pits are located approximately 5 kilometres north-west of Seßlach and are a popular hiking area. As the name suggests, clay was quarried here in the 19th century; subsequently, a habitat unique in Bavaria developed in and around the ‘Graue Grube’ and the ‘Rote Grube’. It almost fell victim to being used as a landfill site, but fortunately the BUND Naturschutz e. V. was able to prevent this by purchasing the land. Since 2000, the area, covering just under 26 hectares, has been a nature reserve and is home to Upper Franconia’s largest population of yellow-bellied toads, as well as numerous endangered hymenoptera (e.g. the digger wasp Psen exaratus, newly discovered in Bavaria) and ground beetles. Snipe, kingfishers, stone crabs, nightjars, woodlarks and turtle doves can also be found here.

Seßlach: Naturbad Autilus

The Autilus Natural Pool and Leisure Centre in Autenhausen is a popular destination for day trips. Here, plants and microorganisms keep the water clean instead of chlorine – which is not only much more environmentally friendly, but also much gentler on the skin and hair. A play area with a spring invites the little ones to splash about. A diving rock and a wide wave slide promise swimming fun for older children. A kiosk and a small beer garden ensure that thirst and hunger don’t stand a chance, and the adjacent campsite offers an adventurous, nature-filled place to stay overnight. Bookings for the campsite can be made via the town of Seßlach by emailing tourismus@sesslach.de or by calling 09569-188 55 66.
