Eichstätt: Informationszentrum Naturpark Altmühltal

In the former monastery church of Notre Dame, one of Eichstätt's most beautiful Baroque buildings, an exhibition on the culture, nature and history of the region, combining classical elements with many stations for listening, feeling and discovering – from a ‘walk’ through the natural landscape to music by local composers to encounters with carnival figures, Romans, knights and many a stone surprise. Children can discover lots of things behind flaps and in drawers – and especially for them, the little dinosaurs Fossi and Juvi tell them all about the diversity of the Altmühltal Nature Park in a child-friendly way on the information boards. In the Garden of the Senses, visitors can look, feel, smell and taste to their heart's content: here, young and old alike can enjoy more than 40 plants with attractive flowers, beguiling scents or spicy flavours, as well as numerous butterflies, bees and bumblebees that take advantage of the rich food supply.

Eichstätt: Altmühltaler Tiererlebniswelt beim Waldhotel Geländer

In the old historic Jura stable next to the hotel, you can study the unique local flora and fauna: over 800 precious animal specimens await you, impressively and characteristically arranged in lifelike situations. Learn about the most important habitats in the Altmühltal Nature Park, one of the most beautiful and largest nature parks in Germany, in fascinating dioramas. Learn more about the inhabitants of the local forests, the typical dry and nutrient-poor grasslands, and the Altmühl and its backwaters. Discover and hear the breathtaking wildlife at night and listen to the voices of nocturnal animals such as foxes, martens and eagle owls. Marvel at majestic birds of prey calmly waiting for their next prey. Enjoy watching playful badgers, which find ideal living conditions in the Altmühl Jura. Admire the industrious woodpeckers, which build new cavities every five to ten years (new subtenants such as jackdaws, tawny owls, stock doves and bats are already waiting for the old dwellings). The exhibition provides a vivid and informative introduction to the secrets of the animal world in the Altmühltal Nature Park. At the Jura Museum in Eichstätt, children and families can embark on an exciting journey through time into the world of dinosaurs and fossils. The “Irma Jones” city rally transforms Eichstätt into an exciting adventure town for young explorers. Together with the intrepid explorer Irma Jones, children embark on a thrilling treasure hunt through the historic old town, solving tricky puzzles along the way.

Exciting tasks and interesting stories about Eichstätt’s sights await at various stations. In the process, children get to know the town in a playful way and discover many hidden details that are otherwise easily overlooked.

The Eichstätt motorhome and tent site is idyllically situated right on the banks of the Altmühl, just a short walk from the historic old town. Here, families, cyclists and canoeists can spend the night surrounded by nature whilst still being within easy reach of Eichstätt’s sights.

The site features modern sanitary facilities, a nearby playground, barbecue facilities and a boat and canoe hire service right on site. The campsite is also situated directly on the Altmühltal Cycle Route and is an ideal starting point for excursions into the Altmühltal Nature Park.

The site offers plenty of space for families in particular to play, relax and explore. Those who wish can even stay overnight in cosy camping barrels and enjoy the natural surroundings in a special way.
