Hohenstein Castle Hotel

Hohenstein Castle has been in the possession of the foundation Oskar-Hacker-Stiftung since 2016. Based on their central theme “Preserve - Develop – Promote”, the main focus is on the preservation and gentle development of Hohenstein Castle and Hohenstein Park.

The aim is to create a link between the historic structure and modern use as a hotel complex with gastronomy. In the park, the historic buildings and gardens are to be preserved or restored in such a way that public use is still possible.

The castle and the park also form the setting of the Kunstforum Schloss Hohenstein (art forum) with its contemporary art exhibitions. In addition, first steps have been taken towards an Ernährungsforum (nutrition forum) and a literature forum.

Hohenstein was first mentioned in a document in 1306, at that time still a castle. What followed was an eventful history, with destruction and looting during the Peasants' Wars and the Thirty Years' War, under changing owners. In 1763, Philipp Ernst Baron von Imhoff acquired the site. He and his descendants gave the Castle and the Park their present appearance. In 1941, it was sold to the Deutsche Reichspost and used as a convalescence home for postal employees and later leased by the Deutsche Bundespost to Caritas to be used as an old people’s home.

In 1976, Oskar Hacker, an entrepreneur from Munich, bought Hohenstein and had carried out extensive restoration work as well as the conversion into a hotel from 1987 to 1993. In order to preserve his life’s work, Oskar Hacker had stipulated that the foundation Oskar-Hacker-Stiftung should be established after his death. The founder died in 2016.
