Lichtenau: Knights Games

The aldermen of Nuremberg have erected a defiant, but also quite a snug border bulwark here at the bordewr to the margravate Ansbach. In both margrave wars in 1449 and 1553 Lichtenau was an important site of the clash between the imperial city and the margraves.

Hardly a knight tournament can set up such an impressive frame. Craftsmen, traders, minstrels and mercenary camps in and around the fortress bring the time around 1500 back to life.

Numerous craftsmen, like makers of lamps, paintbrushes and rakes, robe tailors, glass blowers, calligraphers, instrument builders are to be admired, ... but not only old craft lures! Baking bread is a skill - to bake a good bread against it, is art. The bakers of the baker's guild prove, that they are in control of this art today with their specialities. Pretzels, tartes flambée and delicious bread arise in the show-bakery and in the wood-fired oven. In the "baking-bus", children may bake themselves and a historic bakery shows how this craft has been exercised still 100 years ago.

The master craftsmen of the butcher's guild of Mosbach contribute sausage specialities from the Electoral Palatinate. Delicious sandwich spreads, sweet or hearty, and everything that tastes even better when eaten together with bread, can be tasted and taken home. Beside its offerings, the market presents music and entertainment for the whole family. Further information

The Turn of the Year with the Dilsberg Nightwatchmen at Dilsberg Fortress Ruins

Since 1510 the Dilsberg Nightwatchmen have now been active. Of course the staff has changed since then, but the background has remained the same. As it used to be the Nightwatchmen wander through the alleys of Dilsberg in the night of New Year's Eve.

Since 1923 the custom of the Dilsberg Nightwatchmen at the New Year's Eve parade lives on. Every year twelve men are gathering at the gate tower. They are dressed in long coats and special hats, the "Three Peaks". Alongside this they wear halberds - cutting and thrusting weapons - and lanterns. Twelve times the Nightwatchmen's horn blows, then the Nightwatchmen sing their traditional song "Dilsberg at Night". Further information
