Exhibition: "With the sword or with firm belief - Luther and the Witches"

For us witches are simply just protagonists in fairy tales today, in the Early Modern Age however, a incarnated fear of witches was rampant: torture and burnings unfortunately were daily fare all to often. The Medieval Criminal Museum administers to this multilayered issue and mainly puts Martin Luther in the focus.

The special Exhibition to the Luther Decade also goes into the forensic and social excesses of the witch-hunt in Franconia and Rothenburg with the aid of numerous extraordinary exponates, modern museums-techniques and lively descriptions. Further information

Rosenberg Fortress is one of the largest and best preserved fortresses in Germany. The guided tour goes beginning at the early baroque fortress gate through moats and underground passages onto the strongholds, from where you have a unique view of Kronach. You see the different construction phases of the medieval keep up to the bulwark pentagon of the late baroque, that show the evolving requirements on the construction of fortifications. Since it is an outdoor guided tour, we recommend suitable footwear and a flashlight.

Exhibition: "Porcelain - About Gunsmoke & Battlefield Idyll"

A masterpiece of the world-famous porcelain of Frankenthal shines in the exhibition "About Gunsmoke & Battlefield Idyll" in the Zeughaus Museum. Rarely a coffee- and tea set with 43 parts has been so fully preserved. C. H. Winterstein, one of the best Frankenthal porcelain painters, created the paintings around 1766. Horseman battles in front of historical sceneries, resting soldiers up to the dramatic combats give an idealized image of the combat in the 18th century. Further information

The underground passages and the bulletproof vaults of the fortress form the key point of this guided tour. The casemates that originally served as places for fighting, living and storaging, have been rebuilt as production-sites already at the end of World War II. Functions of the corridor system were monitoring of enemy sapping in case of a siege as well as the diversion of surface water. Also the cistern in Bastion IV is passed.

Architecture has a tremendous influence on our lives and experiences – this holds true especially for people who spent the better part of their lives behind the walls of psychiatric institutions. The historical Prinzhorn collection, which contains works of psychiatric patients from around 1900, contains not only depictions of institutions and patient‘s cells and rooms but also a great variety of various architectural motifs, ranging from small abstract sketches to large and extravagant drawings.

Our Exhibition "Restlessness and Architecture" presents a selection of 150 works on paper and paintings, many of which have not yet been on show to the general public. Further information

Exhibition: "Rembrandt. About the Power and Powerlessness of the Body"

Self-staging, seduction, joy and sorrow: Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) studied the human body precisely. He observed facial expression and gestures with a sharp eye and expressively put them into picture.

This exhibition gives an overview about the graphic reproductional work of the Dutch master. It reports about life and transience, about human power and powerlessness. A comprehensive selection of exquisite etchings by Rembrandt from the important portfolio of the gallery of prints of the Art Collections of the Veste Coburg (fortress) covers the range from his fascinating self-portraits, biblical scenes, up to genre pictures. With sharpened sword and thunder clap – a voyage through time at the Veste Coburg

Take a journey into centuries past against the historic backdrop of the Veste!

One of the focal points of this event is the international and diverse art of fencing, which has been handed down through the centuries and is still taught today.

Alongside "cold" weapons, from the fifteenth century onwards firearms became a permanent feature of combat. And among them, the hand-held firearms in all shapes and sizes that formed part of the soldier’s personal gear played just as important a role as the artillery.

Experienced players from Germany and abroad will be presenting their skills and their equipment. The focus will be on history, techniques, handling and "loading drill", and all the weapons in the demonstration will be fired.

Unlike other mediaeval shows, these demonstrations of weaponry and fortress life on the outer fortifications of the Veste place great emphasis on authenticity and education. Further information

Castle Concert: "Four Ladies in Concert", Saxsessions

Saxsession - the name stands for passionate saxophone playing paired with the joy of making music.

The four female saxophone players from Forchheim and the Upper Palatinate ("Oberpfalz") show their great sonic bandwidth of the saxophone, from the "woofer" up to the high positions in soprano. Especially in the four-part sentence of the saxophone quartet, stylistic, historical and cultural limits can easily be crossed - from the Renaissance music over classical music, jazz or South American sounds up to the music of today.

From hospitality and top jamboree in the secret capital city of beer - Kulbach is well-known for its culture of brewing across the Bavarian borders: the Upper Franconian small town doesn't count as the capital city of beer for nothing.

Until today the life of Kaspar Hauser, who's origin could never doubtlessly be cleared up, is mysterious and secretive. Only about five years after his sudden appearance, the sensitive young man was suspected to have been murdered.

To honour the famous foundling, Ansbach prepares the "Kaspar-Hauser-Festival" every two years, which describe his short, tragic life in manifold ways. This year, everything is focused on the "Child of Europe", how Kaspar Hauser has been called already during his lifetime. Ambitious lectures, artistic and scientific contributions, a criminal play about the murder of Kaspar Hauser, music and visual art belong to the manifold offer during the festival. The aldermen of Nuremberg have erected a defiant, but also quite a snug border bulwark here at the bordewr to the margravate Ansbach. In both margrave wars in 1449 and 1553 Lichtenau was an important site of the clash between the imperial city and the margraves.

627th Historical Fair

Every year on the last weekend in August, medieval handicraft moves to Bad Wimpfen. In the traditional of the former harbour market, which King Wenzel granted the pottery guild of the Imperial City in 1391, the Guild Market delights its visitors with craftsmanship, dancing and music.

Numerous craftsmen, like makers of lamps, paintbrushes and rakes, robe tailors, glass blowers, calligraphers, instrument builders are to be admired, ... but not only old craft lures! Beside jugglers, minstrels and dancers, also knights and guards strengthen the feeling of the medieval goings-on. Further information

Electoral Palatinate Bread Market

Baking bread is a skill - to bake a good bread against it, is art. The bakers of the baker's guild prove, that they are in control of this art today with their specialities. Pretzels, tartes flambée and delicious bread arise in the show-bakery and in the wood-fired oven. In the "baking-bus", children may bake themselves and a historic bakery shows how this craft has been exercised still 100 years ago.

The master craftsmen of the butcher's guild of Mosbach contribute sausage specialities from the Electoral Palatinate. Delicious sandwich spreads, sweet or hearty, and everything that tastes even better when eaten together with bread, can be tasted and taken home. Beside its offerings, the market presents music and entertainment for the whole family. Further information

But there is more than just salty and sweet cake and fresh bread, but also barbecued and cooked specialties. The Oven Festival is also a special flea market, where there is a lot to buy or to experience. Besides the city orchestra Schwäbisch Hall, different bands and clubs take care of the musical entertainment. Further information

Exhibition in the Art Gallery Vogelmann: "Female Sculptors - from Kollwitz to Genzken"

Sculpture as supposed "most unfeminine of all arts" was especially challenging for female artists. Professional female pioneers like Käthe Kollwitz or Clara Rilke-Westhoff ignored the predominant constraints and gender-ideological taboos in the beginning of the 20th century. The paved the way for the female artists of the 1920's like Mag Moll, Emy Roeder or Milly Steger.

About 40 female artists represent not only the social history of female artists, but are also a reason to meaningfully reconsider the past reception. Further information (only in German)

The Turn of the Year with the Dilsberg Nightwatchmen at Dilsberg Fortress Ruins

Since 1510 the Dilsberg Nightwatchmen have now been active. Of course the staff has changed since then, but the background has remained the same. As it used to be the Nightwatchmen wander through the alleys of Dilsberg in the night of New Year's Eve.

Since 1923 the custom of the Dilsberg Nightwatchmen at the New Year's Eve parade lives on. Every year twelve men are gathering at the gate tower. They are dressed in long coats and special hats, the "Three Peaks". Alongside this they wear halberds - cutting and thrusting weapons - and lanterns. Twelve times the Nightwatchmen's horn blows, then the Nightwatchmen sing their traditional song "Dilsberg at Night". Further information
